Irish-French artist Barbara Smith studied at Goldsmith’s College in London, which has helped to nurture many other great talents including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud and Vivienne Westwood. Continually challenging the traditional notions of design and developing her own creative approach to a multitude of disciplines, Smith also trained at Estudio Mariscal in Barcelona with Oscar-winning Film Director Javier Mariscal, who is also one of today’s most innovative and original multidisciplinary artist-designers.
Smith explores artistically through a wide range of mediums from painting and drawing to etching in plexiglass. She uses techniques such as drip-painting and blind-contour drawing, investing in the process itself, which she values just as highly as the result. Smith often includes visual references to popular culture, art history and comics, although her work is frequently characterised by a distinctive and recurrent theme of death and mortality.
Smith currently lives and works in Brittany, France.
